“Your modern day all-road motorbike approaches the power of sportbikes. So your modern day all-road tyre must also have the quality features of a sport tour tyre ánd the tough design and features of an all-road tyre”, as was explained to me by one of the members of the Pirelli R&D team, I recently met at a reception. This guy was a real expert on new gadgets and the effects of developments in tyre technology. What followed was an interesting conversation about Pirelli, motorcycle tyres, the future of rubber compounds and so on.
We also talked about the Pirelli Scorpion Trail II and the differences in comparison to it’s direct predecessor, the Scorpion Trail.
Pirelli Scorpion Trail vs. Pirelli Scorpion Trail 2
The Scorpion Trail was well-known for its playful character on the dry. However, when the rain started to pour, the efficiency became less. Compared to the Scorpion Trail 2, the big blocks were removed. As these big blocks provided much traction off-road, this could sometimes lead to less stability and water drainage on the public road.
To come back to his explanation of the effects of Pirelli’s new motorbike tyre features: the Trail 2 performs much better on wet surfaces and has an increased mileage performance, due to the bi-compound structure, with top level handling throughout its entire rubber life. The specialized tread pattern leads to a more efficient water evacuation and a confident feeling on wet surfaces. As he mentioned witty: “the new Pirelli type gives less slip and more grip”.
Pirelli’s new trademark in tyre development
The ‘lightning’ sign, the specific trademark on the tread pattern on some of the motorcycle tyres in the Pirelli family, is also processed in the Scorpion Trail 2. The lightning sign gives the tyre an aggressive off-road look.
Sport adventure touring meets Enduro street
After talking to a true R&D expert for quite a while, and some internet research myself, I can conclude by saying that when you look for a Sport adventure touring and Enduro street performance tyre blended into one product, you will definitely come across the Pirelli Scorpion Trail 2. “You want to ride with full load and have the same dynamic behaviour? That’s no problem with the Trail 2. The Sport touring profile results in a more optimized contact patch area, giving you the feeling you want on long distances on paved roads and, if necessary, can face dirt and light off-road as well.”
Customize your own tyre
When he left the reception he casually mentioned the coolest feature I have heard that evening: I can customize my own tyre! The Trail 2 has a dedicated area on the side for the buyer to customize a logo, banner or font. In color! You can spent an entire weekend thinking about a cool logo, believe me…
